Emmett W. Chappelle was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1925. Upon graduation of high school he went on to college where he attended the University of California and the University of Washington. When he graduated from the University of Washington Emmett had a Masters of Science. Over the years Emmett worked at a couple different places. He was the Scientist and Biochemist for the Research Institute of Advanced Studies at Stanford University. From there he was a Biochemist for Hazelton Laboratories then an Exobiologist and finally a Astrochemist. With his skills he finally ended up working with the Goddard Space Flight Center as a Remote Sensing Scientist. Emmett eventually found himself working at NASA until he retired in 2001. Emmett W. Chappelle made a name for himself as a Biochemist over the years. He is the recipient of 14 U.S. patents. Some of Emmetts developed techniques are used daily in the medical field. He is known for developing the technique for the detection of bacteria in urine which has led the way for improved diagnoses of the urinary tract infections. The same technique that is used for detecting the bacteria in urine is also used for finding bacteria in blood, spinal fluids, drinking water and even foods that are consumed. Emmett also worked with the scientists at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in advancing LIF for detecting plant stress. No matter how busy he was he was a mentor to minority high school and college students that had talent by bringing them to his laboratories. Even though Emmett retired in 2001 he discovered things that are very useful in the medical field. He always mentored those with talent so they would succeed in the world of scientists just like he did. Hes an inspiration to many for succeeding in this field. |
